Rugby's Poppy Appeal stall returns to Asda after a year away and adds Tesco. The Royal British Legion branch needs volunteers for a few hours each.

The Poppy Appeal is coming back to Rugby town centre this year. The Rugby No. 1 branch of the Royal British Legion will run its collection stall in the Asda store again, and for the first time it will also have a presence in Tesco. Last year, the branch says, it was not possible to have a stall at all.

What the branch needs now is people. Its president, Tim Fountain, wrote to us asking for help spreading the word, and “also our cry for volunteers”.

Back in Asda, and now in Tesco

In the branch’s own words:

“We’re delighted to announce that the Poppy Appeal will be back in Rugby Town Centre this year, with our collection stall in the Asda store. This year we’ll also have a presence in Tesco, giving even more people the chance to pick up a poppy and show their support.”

The collection dates are not fixed yet. The branch says they will go up on its Facebook page as soon as they are confirmed:

“As soon as our dates are confirmed, they will be posted on our Facebook page. Please follow the page so you don’t miss out.”

We will add the dates to this story when the branch publishes them.

Can you spare a few hours?

The stalls only run if there are people to stand at them. The branch’s appeal:

“The Poppy Appeal relies on the generosity of volunteers, and we would love to hear from anyone who could give a few hours of their time to man our stalls. Every shift makes a real difference and helps us deliver the best possible appeal for our armed forces veterans community.”

Anyone who can help should email the branch at tpowell@britishlegion.org.uk.

What it means for you

  • To buy a poppy: look for the branch’s stall in Asda in the town centre, and its presence in Tesco, once the dates are out.
  • To find the dates: follow the Rugby No. 1 Branch on Facebook; we will also update this page.
  • To volunteer: email tpowell@britishlegion.org.uk with when you could do a shift. A few hours is enough.

The appeal runs into Remembrance. Rugby’s parade and service at the War Memorial gates on Hillmorton Road is on Sunday 8 November; the times and road closures are on our Remembrance Sunday page.
