Rugby's green bins stop from 14 December to 15 January. Black and blue bin dates for Christmas 2026 are not out yet; last year's moved to Saturdays.

Checked 25 September 2026. Rugby Borough Council has not published its Christmas 2026 dates for black and blue-lid bins. One thing is already fixed, and it is a bigger change than usual: green garden waste bins will not be collected for at least five weeks, from 14 December 2026 to 15 January 2027.

The quick answer

  • Green bins: no collections from at least 14 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Last year the break was two weeks.
  • Black and blue-lid bins: 2026 dates not yet published. For the last two Christmases, rounds due on Christmas Day and Boxing Day moved to a Saturday, and every other day ran as normal.
  • Expect the dates in late November. The council announced 2024’s on 25 November 2024.

Green bins: a five-week gap this winter

The council’s garden waste page says the service “will cover at least the dates 14 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 inclusive” for the winter suspension. The words “at least” matter: that is the minimum, not a promise that collections restart on 16 January.

The same page still carries last year’s wording in an older set of terms, which gives the comparison. For 2025-26 the suspension covered “at least the dates 22 December 2025 to 2 January 2026”. The gap has gone from two weeks to five.

There is no refund for the missing weeks. The £46 subscription runs from 1 May to 30 April “with a short break at Christmas and New Year”, and the page says there are no discounts. If you have a lot of garden waste to clear before mid-January, Hunters Lane recycling centre takes it, with a booking.

Black and blue-lid bins: what happened the last two years

Rugby does not collect on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. It moves those rounds rather than cancelling them, and in both recent years it moved them to Saturdays.

The 2025 dates are from the council’s Christmas collections page as it stood in December 2025 (archived copy, 18 December 2025). The 2024 dates are from the same page a year earlier (archived 6 December 2024) and from the council’s news release of 25 November 2024, which said collections would “continue as normal on every other day, including New Year’s Day”. The page asked for bins to be out by 7am.

That page now returns a 404. The council’s own bin day page still links to it.

What is different about Christmas 2026

The calendar falls differently this year. From GOV.UK’s bank holiday list:

  • Christmas Day is Friday 25 December
  • Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December, so the bank holiday moves to a substitute day, Monday 28 December
  • New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027

If the council repeats its pattern, only Friday 25 December rounds need to move, because Boxing Day lands on a Saturday. That is our reading of the past two years, not an announcement. Two questions the council has not yet answered:

  • Monday 28 December. Rugby collected as normal on New Year’s Day in both past years, and on the August bank holiday this year. It has not said whether a substitute Boxing Day is treated the same way.
  • Food caddies. The weekly food waste collection launched in July 2026, so this is its first Christmas. Our bin days page found that the caddy is often collected on a different day from the black bin, so a Christmas change could hit the two separately.

When the dates will be published

The council has published later than many. On 10 November 2025 its Christmas page was still showing the 2024 dates (archived copy); the 2025 dates were on it by 8 December. In 2024 the news release went out on 25 November.

We will check again in the third week of November and update this page with the 2026 table as soon as it appears. The council’s app sends free bin day reminders, which is the simplest way to catch a moved round.
