Where only a postcode district is shown, the register publishes no street address. That is usual for businesses run from home, such as cake makers.
Why the list is short, and why it may grow
Fifteen is fewer than usual. The register shows 53 ratings dated September, 37 in August and 66 in July.
Part of the reason is timing. A business that gets a low score has a right to appeal before the rating goes public, and it can also ask for a revisit after improving. So ratings dated late October, and lower ones in particular, can still appear in the coming weeks. A clean sheet today is not a promise that no October inspection went badly.
The borough as a whole
Across the borough, 829 businesses currently hold a rating. Of those:
- 596, or 72%, are rated 5
- 134 are rated 4
- 37 are rated 3
- 20 are rated 2
- 35 are rated 1
- 7 are rated 0, meaning urgent improvement is necessary
Another 51 are awaiting their first inspection and 41 are exempt.
What it means for you
- Check before you book or order. Every business’s current score, and the date of its last inspection, is on the FSA’s ratings site. Home bakers and mobile caterers are rated too, so it is worth checking for a Christmas cake or a party caterer.
- A rating is a snapshot. It reflects hygiene on the day of the inspection: cleanliness, food handling and how the business is managed. It does not judge the food itself.
- Businesses can respond. Any business can appeal its rating, publish a right of reply on the register, or ask for a re-inspection after making improvements.
Rugby Borough Council carries out the inspections. If you are worried about a food business, you can report it to the council through the FSA’s report a food problem service.
